Oost City route · East of the Amstel, parks and docks

Amsterdam Oost escorts, eastbound on a green wave

Point the headlights east from the centre and the city changes register fast: market streets, a broad park, then old docklands reborn as sharp modern quays. Our companions make this run every night, and most of it happens on wide, forgiving roads.

Local knowledge

Markets, parks and harbour islands

Oost is really several neighbourhoods wearing one name. The Oosterpark anchors the district with lawns and old trees, and a short walk away the Dappermarkt runs its stalls down the length of its street, one of the liveliest daily markets in the city. In the Indische Buurt, the Javastraat has turned into a strip of coffee bars, bakeries and small kitchens that fill up by early evening. Towards the water, the sails of the De Gooyer windmill still turn above a former docklands corner, and the Eastern Docklands themselves, Java-eiland and the KNSM island, line their quays with bold apartment architecture and long views over the harbour.

Beds east of the centre

Hotels in Oost gather around the Oosterpark and along the broad Wibautstraat corridor running down towards Amstel station, with a newer crop out on the docklands islands where rooms look straight onto the water. In between sit countless rented apartments, from Indische Buurt walk-ups to sleek quayside blocks. If your building hides its entrance on a side street or behind a courtyard, as many here do, a line of description in the chat saves her circling the block.

Local knowledge

The eastbound drive

Oost is generous to drivers by Amsterdam standards. The Wibautstraat and the Middenweg are wide and quick, the eastern exits of the A10 drop straight into the district, and parking, while never free of drama, actually exists. A confirmed booking usually knocks within the hour, whatever the clock says. The one caveat is the docklands: some island quays are one-way loops or closed at the tip, so her car may stop at the head of a pier while she walks the last stretch along the water, heels sensible, timing intact.

How the east does evenings

Nights here are sociable without being showy: aperitivo on a market street, dinner where the tables spill onto the pavement, a slow walk along a quay while the harbour clinks in the dark. Bianka cooks Italian and knows her way around a wine list, an ideal match for the food streets. Tina hunts record shops by day and craft cocktails by night, and Lea, sweet and spontaneous with a love of theatre and ceramics, suits the district's small stages and studio corners.

West of here the canal ring takes over on the Amsterdam Centrum page, and across the Amstel the terraces of De Pijp are a short bridge-hop away. Every companion in the gallery covers the east side.
