Oost is really several neighbourhoods wearing one name. The Oosterpark anchors the district with lawns and old trees, and a short walk away the Dappermarkt runs its stalls down the length of its street, one of the liveliest daily markets in the city. In the Indische Buurt, the Javastraat has turned into a strip of coffee bars, bakeries and small kitchens that fill up by early evening. Trams cross the district along the Linnaeusstraat, the Middenweg and the Mauritskade, and the IJtram runs out past the docklands towards IJburg. From the airport, a train to Amsterdam Zuid or Centraal plus one change brings most guests to Oost in around forty minutes.

From the centre it is a ten to fifteen minute drive to the Oosterpark, a little more to the islands in the east. Traffic is lightest after nine in the evening, and the only regular slowdowns are the Wibautstraat at rush hour and the Piet Heinkade during events along the waterfront.
