  • Speaks English

When the Albert Cuyp market folds away its stalls and the terraces around the Sarphatipark fill with candlelight, De Pijp slips into its night gear. Wine bars glow amber, bicycles rattle over tram rails, and in a flat above a corner bistro Luna is fastening an earring, checking the time and calling for a car.

Bold is her default. She says what she means, chooses where she wants to go and walks into a room as if the lighting had been arranged for her, and there is a sensual assurance in that independence that people struggle to forget. At 22 she stands 171 cm, curvy, her long dark auburn red hair turning to copper under the streetlamps, her brown eyes full of intent. She dresses in bold modern glamour: crisp whites, beaded details, pearls worn with attitude, pieces that make an entrance a second before she does.

Photography occupies her days, faces, shadows and reflections in shop windows, and she has a habit of framing a shot with her fingers whenever something in your room catches the light. Wine tasting is a serious pleasure; she can talk terroir without a trace of snobbery and usually has a bottle she wants you to try. Theatre, especially productions that take risks, rounds her out, and she prefers a play that divides the audience to one that simply sends everyone home content. A fellow wine enthusiast lives across town: Bianka in the Jordaan knows her grapes just as well.

Luna leaves from De Pijp, a quick run to Oud-Zuid and the RAI and only slightly longer to the canals. Her English is direct and warm, never coy. Independence means she is at ease anywhere, a grand hotel suite or a tucked-away apartment, and she has no need for anybody else to set the tone. Tell her where you are staying, and she will tell you when to start listening for tyres on the street below.

Her kind of evening

A night out with Luna

She plans an evening the way she frames a photograph: decide what matters, cut everything else. What matters, most nights, is one excellent bottle, one room with proper light, and company that can hold a conversation without checking its phone. She will arrive from De Pijp with the wine already chosen in her head and a look that suggests the lighting was arranged in her honour, because as far as she is concerned it was.

Expect her to taste your wine before she praises it, honestly either way, and to find the one corner of your suite worth photographing. If there is a daring play in town she has seen it and has verdicts. The night ends when she decides it has earned an ending, and somehow that is always later than either of you planned.

In her own words

Luna, in her words

Can I choose the wine?

You can try. Show me two bottles and I will tell you which one you actually want. I am right upsettingly often.

What do you photograph?

Light, mostly. Faces when they stop posing. If you relax properly, you may end up my favourite shot of the month.

Are you as independent as they say?

More. I arrive with my own opinions and leave with them intact. The good news is that I share generously in between.
